Ethereum Advocates Set to Introduce zkEVM ‘Scroll’ in Accordance with Ethereum Values

Following two years of focused development, a collective of Ethereum advocates is nearing the launch of their zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine (zkEVM) known as ‘Scroll,’ which has been carefully designed with the fundamental values of Ethereum in mind.
Although there are various zero-knowledge EVMs currently available, Scroll’s co-founder, Ye Zhang, pointed out that their initiative is grounded in idealism. They remain steadfast in their dedication to the philosophies and principles that Ethereum embodies. Zhang described this project as a “labor of love” motivated by a collective ambition to enhance Ethereum while maintaining its decentralized ethos.
He emphasized that Scroll transcends merely addressing computational issues; it is fueled by community involvement and human interest. “We started in an open-source, community-driven manner,” Zhang noted. “We can cultivate this community organically and subsequently expand our network effect, rather than through aggressive marketing tactics.”
The zkEVM is set to launch in a matter of weeks following thorough testing and code audits. The rollout will occur once key projects such as Uniswap and Aave are prepared to launch on the platform. Zhang mentioned that zk-rollups, a fundamental aspect of Scroll, are regarded as the “holy grail” of layer-2 scaling solutions due to their efficiency and security.
Nonetheless, Scroll enters a competitive landscape, with rivals like Polygon, Immutable, StarkWare, and ConsenSys’ Linea providing zkEVM solutions. Zhang pointed out that Scroll offers a “complete proof” of all Ethereum “opcodes” and transaction elements, delivering a more comprehensive solution compared to some of its competitors.
Scroll, a two-year layer-2 scaling initiative in progress, utilizes zero-knowledge proofs to condense data off-chain, with only proofs submitted on-chain. This method facilitates increased throughput. The EVM component guarantees native compatibility with existing Ethereum software and applications.
While the initial configuration may involve some degree of centralization, such as sequencers, Zhang clarified that the project’s roadmap includes plans for decentralization over time. The launch of Scroll signifies a notable achievement in Ethereum’s ongoing pursuit of scalability while adhering to its principles of decentralization and community-driven development.
