Dencun Upgrade Update: Validation and Long-Term Readiness0

In the most recent update regarding Ethereum’s Dencun upgrade, lead developer Tim Beiko provided details from the All Core Developer Execution (ACDE) meeting held on 28 September. This upgrade is set to introduce significant modifications across Ethereum’s two Mainnet layers: the execution layer, which manages , and the consensus layer, which is centered on blockchain consensus through staking.

A key topic addressed during the meeting was the advancement of the EIP-4788 contract, which relates to the hash tree root within the Beacon Chain. This contract facilitates data verification from the consensus layer, thereby improving Ethereum’s overall capabilities. Beiko mentioned that audits were performed on the EIP-4788 contract to confirm its reliability.

In contrast to the previous update that mainly concentrated on enhancing validator schemes and deploying nodes, this time, Beiko explored in greater detail the modifications made that are essential for Beacon Chain users. These adjustments are intended to future-proof contracts on the Beacon roots against block times, a crucial factor for Ethereum’s progression. Notably, Beiko affirmed that other development teams, in addition to the Ethereum Foundation, did not identify any new issues with the contract.

Another important development discussed was the testing of the Maximal Extractable Value (MEV-Boost), a middleware that allows validators to request blocks from a network of builders. However, Beiko emphasized the necessity for significant participation from validators, development experts, and networking professionals to ensure the effective implementation of MEV-Boost on the Ethereum Mainnet. To support testing, a temporary devnet-10 will be initiated following devnet-9, featuring a large validator set to evaluate new churn limits.

The meeting also covered the question of whether Ethereum L1 Mainnet should adopt Zero-Knowledge (ZK) compatibility. The developers concurred that this decision should be made promptly and requires thorough consideration. Some expressed doubts about whether this functionality aligns with Ethereum’s overarching objectives.

As a consequence of these discussions and the uncertainty surrounding ZK-friendliness, the developers have arranged their next ACDE meeting for 12th October at 14:00 UTC. This upcoming meeting is expected to address critical issues and contribute to Ethereum’s ongoing development and advancement.
