Dencun Upgrade for Ethereum May Experience Delay, Testing Essential for Mainnet Deployment
The highly anticipated Dencun upgrade for Ethereum, expected to introduce new functionalities and enhancements in scalability, may face a postponement, as disclosed during a recent meeting among developers on September 21. Although the development of Dencun is approaching its final stages, the necessity for thorough testing, including deployment to a testnet, could delay its launch on the Ethereum mainnet until the following year.
Tim Beiko, a representative of the Ethereum Foundation, voiced concerns during the meeting regarding the timeline for Dencun’s testnet deployment, highlighting its significance for the mainnet launch. Beiko remarked, “I think the implication is if we don’t do a test net before Devconnect [Nov. 13-18] … it’s probably unlikely we can do mainnet before the … Christmas holidays … and people being gone, so that’s probably not the best time for commitment.”
In the past, developers had avoided specifying a launch date for Dencun, but initial projections had suggested a release before the conclusion of 2023.

The possible delay of Dencun follows recent challenges with the launch of Ethereum’s Holesky testnet, which is still pending a relaunch. During the meeting, developers deliberated on the availability of Holesky for Dencun testing prior to Devconnect in November. Ethereum Foundation member Parithosh Jayanthi revealed that Holesky’s relaunch is planned for September 28 and will be prepared for Dencun testing ahead of the forthcoming conference.
