  • Peter Schiff’s account was also targeted in the hacking incident.

A number of Twitter accounts belonging to prominent individuals in the cryptocurrency sector have been infiltrated by a group of fraudsters. Utilizing the hacked accounts, these criminals have spread phishing schemes, leading to the loss of around $1 million in cryptocurrency assets.

In recent weeks, we have observed over 8 account takeovers associated with the same group of fraudsters, as indicated by the connections of their addresses on-chain.

In a detailed Twitter thread, ZachXBT highlighted the identification of several wallets “linked on chain” that are closely associated with the phishing attacks being propagated through the compromised accounts. Among those affected are Cole Villemain, the founder of Pudgy Penguins, DJ and NFT enthusiast Steve Aoki, and Pete Rizzo, the editor of Bitcoin Magazine.

Peter Schiff, a prominent advocate for gold who is publicly critical of cryptocurrencies, faced a security breach. His account was hacked to promote a questionable link related to tokenized gold within the framework of Decentralized Finance.

In a total of 40 attacks, hackers succeeded in stealing approximately $400 million from various cryptocurrency initiatives. This represents a notable 70% decrease in stolen assets compared to the same timeframe in 2022, as reported.
