Blockchain.com Receives MPI License in Singapore’s Growing Crypto Market

Singapore’s Monetary Authority (MAS) has reinforced its status as a crypto-friendly jurisdiction by issuing a significant payment institution (MPI) license to the well-known , Blockchain.com. This achievement marks Blockchain.com as the twelfth digital payment token service provider in the country, highlighting the nation’s firm dedication to cultivating a dynamic crypto ecosystem.

On August 1st, Blockchain.com was granted the MPI license, allowing it to offer digital payment token services to institutional and accredited investors. The path to this approval was lengthy, as the exchange had already obtained in-principle approval from MAS the previous year, demonstrating the rigorous regulatory assessment associated with such licenses.

The number of licensed crypto service providers in Singapore has increased over time, featuring notable entities such as Circle, Independent Reserve, Paxos, Revolut, and DBS Vickers. This expanding group of providers reflects the country’s consistent goal to become a globally recognized center for cryptocurrency activities.

MAS’s strong support for the fintech sector is evident through significant financial investments. To strengthen the fintech industry, including entities, the authority committed $112 million. Additionally, regulations introduced in July highlight Singapore’s focus on protecting customers within the crypto sector.

These new rules require crypto service providers to place customer funds in a statutory trust by the end of the year, thereby improving the security of users’ assets. Furthermore, MAS is developing additional measures to prevent crypto providers from facilitating lending or staking of retail customer assets and to encourage responsible industry practices.

Singapore’s proactive efforts to strengthen its crypto environment are producing concrete outcomes. A July report by Galaxy Digital noted that while the United States remained the leader in crypto startup funding in Q2 2022, Singapore-based crypto firms achieved third place, behind only the United Kingdom.

Blockchain.com’s MPI license aligns with MAS’s in-principle approval of a similar license for Ripple, a leading blockchain-based payments company, in June. These strategic developments illustrate the government’s resolve to create a supportive environment for the growth of Singapore’s crypto industry.

With established funding commitments and a modern regulatory framework that prioritizes customer safety, Singapore is positioned to strengthen its reputation as a global hub for cryptocurrencies and related services. As Blockchain.com’s success and Ripple’s approval converge, Singapore’s ambition to become a crypto powerhouse is clearly advancing.
