AVAX blockchain explorer set to cease operations amid disputes over Etherscan fees.

Snowtrace.io, a widely used blockchain explorer for Avalanche (AVAX), is set to close its website, which utilizes Etherscan’s Explorer-as-a-Service (EaaS) toolkit, on November 30. The Snowtrace team has specified that only the explorer powered by Etherscan will be discontinued.

In an announcement made on October 30, Snowtrace users are advised to back up their information, including private name tags and contact verification details, before the specified date. Although the team did not provide a clear explanation for the closure of the explorer, some have suggested that the service fees associated with Etherscan’s EaaS toolkit may be a factor. Mikko Ohtama, co-founder of tradingprotocol, asserts that an annual subscription to EaaS could range from $1 to $2 million each year. Ohtama stated:

“EtherScan is a very good product, but smart contract verification is something that needs to be decentralised. Regulators and others are not going to be kosher with, how do you check this? The source code is hosted by a private company in Malaysia”

Phillip Liu Jr., head of strategy and operations at Ava Labs, also remarked that the protocol is “moving onto something better” and is “absolutely not” halting operations. For a fee, Etherscan’s EaaS service offers blockchains a block explorer and application programming interface (API) solution. A block explorer may be terminated due to the non-renewal of an EaaS service agreement, inadequate bandwidth, or low traffic. In such cases, users are encouraged to back up their data, including private name tags, transaction notes, contract verification details, etc., prior to the shutdown.

The instance of Snowtrace by @etherscan will be discontinued on 30th November (00:00 UTC)
