  • The hacker claimed that anyone who participated in the airdrop would be eligible to receive free APT.
  • The malicious actor has seemingly gained access to Aptos CEO Mo Shaikh’s Twitter account as well.

It appears that a Twitter account associated with the Aptos Foundation has been compromised, with the attackers directing followers to a fraudulent website promoting a fake airdrop opportunity.

The hacker tweeted that all individuals who joined the airdrop would be able to claim free APT on the APT network. It also mentioned that claims exceeding $1 million had been made.

Users Advised Against Participation

The deceptive announcement refers to an airdrop on the Ethereum blockchain. Despite the extensive spread of the message, Aptos Labs has assured its users that the Aptos blockchain will function normally until appropriate measures are taken to regain control of the account.

The situation has escalated as the malicious actor has reportedly taken over Aptos CEO Mo Shaikh’s Twitter account and is now promoting the airdrop to Shaikh’s 24.5K followers.

Aptos Labs promptly issued a warning on Twitter, advising users to refrain from clicking a link that leads to a seemingly legitimate but fraudulent website, where they are encouraged to click a “claim” button before being shown a QR code that attempts to deceive them into linking their wallet.

The team stated:

“We’ve received official communication from Aptos Foundation that @Aptos_Network has been compromised. The latest tweet regarding an $APT airdrop is fraudulent. Please DO NOT engage with that tweet or the link provided.”

This incident represents yet another attack utilizing compromised social media accounts. This method is commonly employed to defraud cryptocurrency holders. It remains unclear how many individuals fell victim to the fake airdrop announcement.
