From murals to money: Barcelona street artists express their enthusiasm for Bitcoin.
From skate parks and construction sites to train stations and bus stops, a duo of Bitcoin-enthusiast graffiti artists from Barcelona, Spain, have been diligently working to promote Bitcoin.
Street Cy₿er, a group of artists and supporters, has been producing Bitcoin (BTC) street art throughout Europe since its inception in January 2023 to enhance awareness of the cryptocurrency.
One of the co-founders of Street Cy₿er, known as “Street,” informed Cointelegraph that the team comprises over 100 educators, enthusiasts, artists, musicians, activists, and journalists. Their work can be observed in cities such as Barcelona, London, Berlin, Madrid, Prague, Riga (Latvia), and Tallin (Estonia).

A significant portion of their artwork, which they showcase on social media, seeks to convey strong messages regarding the alleged shortcomings of the traditional financial system and the potential role of Bitcoin. Other artworks aim to simply raise awareness about cryptocurrency. Street mentioned to Cointelegraph:
“Street art is also a means to circumvent traditional media, which is frequently influenced by powerful interests.”
He stated that the driving force behind Street Cy₿er’s Bitcoin street art is straightforward: to advocate for a more equitable world.
“The connection between street art and Bitcoin is a potent one. By collaborating, these two movements contribute to the creation of a more just and fair society.”
The gallery on the Street Cy₿er website currently displays over 70 images of their artwork, each featuring the Bitcoin logo or referencing its name.
“Buy Bitcoin, defund the state”

Regarding specific pieces of their work, Street explained that the concept behind “Buy Bitcoin Defund The State” was to encourage individuals to consider how Bitcoin can facilitate a freer society by diminishing the state’s influence in people’s lives.
“Bitcoin serves as a peaceful method to protest against the state and its policies. It provides a means to disengage from the traditional financial system [and] evade the state’s tyranny.”
Street asserted that Bitcoin is being utilized to construct a “new society” that thrives on individual liberty and voluntary cooperation — a philosophy advocated by numerous cryptocurrency anarchists globally.

Street believes that Bitcoin’s limited supply will hinder governments from waging wars since they cannot simply print more BTC to fund them.
“This will complicate the ability of governments to sustain large military forces and will render war less financially viable,” he stated.
If wars were hypothetically financed with Bitcoin, the cryptocurrency’s transparency would make it challenging for state actors to conceal war expenditures, according to Street, and such actions would likely be detected by opposing states.

Moreover, Street mentioned that the “Bitcoin Makes War Unaffordable” message is linked to advocating for peace and freedom globally.

Street posits that if governments utilized Bitcoin to finance education instead of printing money, free education worldwide could become a reality.
Due to Bitcoin’s scarcity, governments would need to be more judicious about its allocation, stated Street:
“Bitcoin is a limited resource, so governments would have to be cautious about their spending. This would enhance governmental accountability to their citizens and help ensure that education remains a priority.”
Not all of Street Cy₿er’s Bitcoin street art carries a political message — the team also appeals to fans of cartoons by featuring Bitcoin’s symbol alongside characters like Mario and Ronald McDonald.

The Street Cy₿er team has recently launched a project titled “Bitcoin: The Art of Revolution” in Barcelona, Spain, which will host various exhibitions, workshops, and classes for those interested in learning more about Bitcoin.

Bitcoin logo around the world
Bitcoin advocates have also been employing other creative methods to disseminate information about the cryptocurrency.
In March, a Bitcoin logo with the caption “Study Bitcoin” was projected onto the European Central Bank in Frankfurt, Germany, as well as on the central banks of other nations such as the Czech Republic and Switzerland.
This projection took place during a period when the global banking sector was under scrutiny following the failures of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank in the United States.
Love the fact that it says "Study Bitcoin" and not "Buy Bitcoin".

Another Bitcoin logo was illuminated on the Berliner Fernsehturm tower, Germany’s tallest structure, a few months earlier in January. The German Bitcoiner behind this initiative expressed a desire to draw attention to the cryptocurrency.
A spartan with Bitcoin-logoed eyes, captioned “HODL (Hold On for Dear Life),” was observed by passersby in Hong Kong in 2020.
This artwork even garnered praise from Tyler Winklevoss, CEO of the cryptocurrency exchange Gemini.

Some advocates have opted for simpler methods to raise awareness. “Stuff4btc” has been promoting the message by placing stickers on chairs, tables, and light poles in public spaces.
