FSB Proposes Stringent Crypto Regulation Standards to G20 Nations

- Traditional financial institutions advocated for more crypto restrictions.
- Gandhinagar, Gujarat in eastern India has been the location of the third conference.
India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, whose country currently holds the G20 presidency, announced on Tuesday that the G20 had endorsed the Financial Stability Board’s (FSB) recommendations regarding crypto asset activities and global stablecoin arrangements.
Following several reports of misconduct during a turbulent year for the crypto sector, the international standard-setter, the FSB, recommended stricter standards on Monday to better protect customers’ funds and prevent conflicts of interest.
Traditional financial institutions advocated for tighter crypto restrictions throughout the consultation process. Meanwhile, crypto exchanges such as Binance and Coinbase had previously expressed concerns that stricter regulations might stifle innovation.
Stance on Crypto Regulation
Sitharaman stated that the G20 supports the FSB’s proposals for the regulation of stablecoins. This comes despite previous reports indicating that the G7 and G20 were at odds over how to regulate stablecoins.
The third conference of finance ministers and central bank governors under India’s presidency was held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. It was at this venue that the announcement was made.
According to Sitharaman, discussions extended late into the night on Monday. During this time, India’s presidential note on crypto was submitted. Local sources suggested that the memo aimed to summarize the efforts of various nations and organizations, although the exact contents of the note remain unclear.
In September, the G20 will receive not only the FSB’s proposals but also a synthesis paper from the FSB and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on the global macroeconomic implications of cryptocurrencies. The G20 is expected to finalize its stance on cryptocurrency during India’s chairmanship at that time.
