Security experts report hundreds of fake crypto projects, 2026/01/14 12:05:15

Over the past two months, the Internet has been swept by a wave of fraudulent schemes related to investments in cryptocurrency. From December to January, BI.Zone Risk Protection experts discovered 701 fake websites in various domain zones, including Russian.
According to analysts, in the fourth quarter of 2025, the number of fraud cases increased by more than 10% compared to the previous year. Basically, attackers create phishing resources that disguise themselves as popular platforms for trading and exchanging cryptocurrency.
To attract victims, scammers actively purchase advertising, trying to raise their sites in search results. They distribute links through instant messengers and social networks, thereby increasing their reach. A characteristic feature of phishing sites is almost identical content: the differences are limited only to the name of the platform and sometimes to the color scheme, cybersecurity experts point out.
Attackers also resort to other tricks. They organize fake cryptocurrency giveaways and publish fake articles in the name of celebrities on sites that imitate reputable media resources.
A typical deception scheme is constructed as follows. Attackers attract users with promises of high profits with minimal risks. After this, the victim transfers the funds to the balance, supposedly for trust management. The user sees money in a fake personal account, but in reality the funds go to scammers.
BI.ZONE experts warn that the number of fraudulent schemes may increase in the near future. This is due to forecasts about a possible record growth in the Bitcoin rate at the beginning of 2026. Analysts expect that now, in conditions of geopolitical and economic uncertainty, demand for alternative instruments of savings, including cryptocurrency, will increase, creating favorable conditions for attackers.
The head of BI.ZONE Digital Risk Protection, Dmitry Kiryushkin, calls for caution regarding any investment proposals. This is especially true for messages coming from strangers, or options that appear in search results. He emphasizes that scammers are often hidden behind overly tempting conditions for quick money or sweepstakes.
Earlier, a 46-year-old resident of Kursk transferred 28 million rubles to a scammer who offered to make quick money by investing in cryptocurrency. The woman’s involvement in the crypto scheme lasted about a year, and during this time the Kurdish woman sold almost all her property and transferred the money to “trust management.”
