Individual entrepreneurs engaged in mining and individuals mining cryptocurrency must report their earnings by April 30 for the first time, as stated by the Federal Tax Service of Russia (FTS).

To operate legally in Russia, individual entrepreneurs are required to register in a special registry for miners and operators of mining infrastructure. At the beginning of the year, there were approximately 1,000 individual entrepreneurs listed in the registry, according to the FTS. Individuals are not required to register in the registry if they consume no more than 6,000 kWh of electricity per month for mining, officials reminded.

The tax declaration must include both income from cryptocurrency mining and profits from the subsequent sale of mined assets.

“To accurately calculate the tax base for transactions involving digital currency on each date of income recognition, the FTS of Russia has published information on market quotes for digital currencies and total daily trading volumes from foreign trading organizers (exchanges) based on data from open sources,” the agency’s announcement stated.

Taxpayers have the right to independently select market quotes, relying on data from one of the specified trading platforms for the corresponding pair. The FTS considers its “Personal Account for Taxpayers” website to be the fastest way to generate reports. All individuals engaged in mining, regardless of the volume of production, are responsible for adhering to the deadlines for submitting declarations, the FTS asserted.

Previously, Denis Kuzmichev, head of the registration and accounting department for taxpayers at the FTS, suggested that Russian miners would pay around 567 million rubles in taxes for the previous year. This amount turned out to be ten times lower than expected.
