In Michigan, a proposal has been made to pay government employees in cryptocurrencies0

Michigan State Representative Matt Maddock, affiliated with the Republican Party, has introduced a bill that would allow government employees to receive their salaries in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies of their choice.

The legislation has been developed in collaboration with the Michigan Bitcoin Trade Council, which advocates for the interests of the crypto industry within the state. The bill proposes amendments to Michigan’s Wage and Fringe Benefits Act.

If the bill is approved, starting January 1, 2027, employees of state agencies will have the option to choose one of three methods for salary payment: cash in U.S. dollars, bank transfer, or cryptocurrency. According to Maddock, workers should have access to a selection of at least six digital assets, including Bitcoin.

The legislator emphasized that these measures aim to provide government employees with greater freedom in selecting their payment method while also positioning Michigan as a leader among states utilizing digital assets. However, the bill prohibits the state treasury from offering government employees payments in digital assets owned by the state or in central bank digital currencies (CBDCs).

Last year, a bill was introduced in the Michigan legislature to create a crypto reserve, proposing that state authorities invest up to 10% of local budget funds in cryptocurrency. If enacted, Michigan authorities would be able to issue cryptocurrency loans to generate additional revenue.
