The Canadian Parliament has begun deliberating a bill aimed at instituting a complete ban on cryptocurrency donations to politicians. The rationale behind this proposal is the potential threat posed by foreign entities using digital assets to influence election outcomes.

The legislation is titled the “Strong and Free Elections Act.” It includes amendments to the election law that would prohibit political parties and other participants in the electoral process from accepting donations in cryptocurrencies. Additionally, it seeks to ban contributions made through prepaid discount cards, as both digital assets and such cards are considered “difficult to trace.”

“By implementing the Strong and Free Elections Act, we are taking new steps to counter foreign threats and enhance coordination among authorities. We are taking measures to ensure that our elections remain free, fair, and secure,” stated the bill’s sponsor, Member of Parliament Steven MacKinnon.

Should the bill be approved, politicians will be required to either return any received cryptocurrency donations to the sender, destroy them, or transfer them to the electoral commission. Furthermore, penalties are proposed for individuals donating via cryptocurrencies, with fines amounting to the donation value plus up to $25,000 for individuals and up to $100,000 for organizations.

The bill must receive approval in the House of Commons, pass in the Senate, and be signed by the Governor General of Canada before it can become law. A similar proposal was introduced by Canadian lawmakers in 2024, but it did not pass the House of Commons.

A few days ago, the authorities in the United Kingdom implemented a ban on cryptocurrency donations to politicians.
