An illegal mining farm has been discovered at an abandoned gas station in the village of Lokhovo, located in the Cheremkhovo district of the Irkutsk region. The damage to the regional energy system is estimated at 2 million rubles, according to the Irkutsk Electric Network Company.

During an unscheduled inspection of meters in Lokhovo, specialists identified an unauthorized connection. The mining equipment was situated within the former gas station building and a nearby kiosk.

In one of the rooms, a so-called noise box was found—a structure that concealed the operation of 10 mining devices connected in a manner that bypassed electricity metering. Energy experts estimate that the total load of the farm exceeded 27 kW.

A security guard was present at the site; however, the owners of the equipment have not been identified. To halt the illegal consumption of electricity, the equipment was dismantled.

Materials regarding the potential theft of electricity have been forwarded to the regional prosecutor’s office. The agency will conduct an investigation and decide on holding those responsible accountable, the electric network company added.

Previously, the director of “Irkutskenergosbyt,” Andrey Kharitonov, stated that miners attempt to disguise their equipment, including under heating systems for agricultural buildings. According to him, approximately 8,000 mining farms have been identified over time, although the actual number of violations may be higher.
