DJ and NFT collector Steve Aoki to liquidate nearly all crypto assets0

DJ, producer, and NFT collector Steve Aoki is divesting a significant portion of his cryptocurrency holdings, transferring them to the Gemini exchange for cash, as noted by analysts from Arkham Intelligence. Five years prior, Aoki predicted that non-fungible tokens would become an integral part of mainstream culture.

Aoki’s wallet sold 1.785 billion SHIB tokens for approximately $10,300, exchanged 7.25 for $15,900, and transferred $29,650 in to Gemini. Two weeks earlier, the same wallet sold 4.155 billion PEPE meme coins via 1inch for $14,700. Arkham also recorded minor stablecoin transfers ranging from $600 to $1,700 through MetaMask.

Aoki currently retains seven NFTs from the Bored Ape Yacht Club collection featuring images of bored apes. He acquired these in 2021 during the NFT boom, spending over $800,000 on the purchase. The current total value of these NFTs is around $97,000, indicating a depreciation of 88% for the non-fungible tokens.

A few years ago, Aoki secured funding for the NFT television show Dominion X, developed in partnership with Seth Green’s Stoopid Buddy Stoodios. The project sold 500 NFTs in 30 seconds on the Nifty Gateway platform. According to the artist’s manager, the revenue “barely covered” production costs but demonstrated the existence of a market for “original intellectual property on the blockchain.” Ultimately, the show never aired.

The singer and actor Justin Bieber also incurred losses on the “bored apes” collection. The non-fungible token #3001 in his wallet has depreciated by 99% since its purchase, dropping from $1.3 million to $12,000. Overall, the price trends for Bored Ape confirm a broader decline in interest in NFTs: the minimum price (floor price) of these crypto assets has fallen from $400,000 at the beginning of 2022 to less than $14,000 today.

Meanwhile, Yuga Labs, the creator of the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), only recently settled a long-standing legal dispute over intellectual property rights with artists Ryder Ripps and Jeremy Cahen in April.
