In the UK, cryptocurrency donations to political parties have been banned0

The UK Parliament has enacted new regulations governing donations to political parties. Foreign individuals will be restricted from donating more than £100,000 annually, and cryptocurrency donations are entirely prohibited.

Parliament officials stated that the ban on cryptocurrency donations aims to prevent the use of digital assets to influence elections. Authorities believe that the difficulty in tracing the source of funds in cryptocurrencies increases the risk of receiving financing from foreign nations and associated entities. This prohibition may be reevaluated once a comprehensive regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies is established.

The new regulations are already in effect. Additionally, authorities plan to amend the Representation of the People Act to extend the restrictions to previously received donations. If the amendments are approved, parties and politicians will be given 30 days to return funds deemed illegal.

“The government will take all necessary measures to safeguard our democracy. Foreign interference and illicit funds pose a threat to the integrity of our elections. The ban on cryptocurrency donations is essential,” stated Steve Reed, the Minister for Housing, Communities, and Local Government.

At the end of February, Matt Western, the chair of the UK Parliament’s Joint Committee on National Security Strategy, also called for a ban on cryptocurrency donations.
