The Chair of the UK Joint Committee on National Security Strategy, Matt Western, has proposed implementing a temporary moratorium on cryptocurrency donations to political parties.

He stated that this is essential to formulate regulatory guidelines and mitigate the risks of foreign interference, as digital assets can currently be exploited by foreign nations to influence political funding.

As the military role of the UK intensifies, whether regarding issues related to Ukraine or the relationships between the US and the European Union, Western believes that the desire of other countries to sway the nation’s political decisions will only increase.

He urged the Electoral Commission to establish protective measures, including allowing donations in crypto assets solely through companies registered with the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), and only when the source of funds can be verified.

The parliamentarian also advocated for a ban on crypto mixers—services that obscure the origins of transactions—and suggested requiring parties to convert received crypto donations into British pounds within 48 hours.

Additionally, Western proposed enhancing checks on the sources of funds, increasing penalties for violations in political financing, and expanding the powers of regulators to promptly investigate such cases.

In contrast to the UK, the United States supports cryptocurrency donations. Many politicians, including the current president Donald Trump, have accepted funds in digital assets. In 2023, Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, who ran for the US presidency, also accepted donations in bitcoins.
