Blockchain developers’ activity has decreased by 75%., 2026/03/12 14:49:03

The number of new code submissions in blockchains has decreased by approximately 75% since the beginning of last year, dropping from 850,000 to 210,000 per week, according to analysts from the Artemis platform. The count of active developers has fallen by 56%, now totaling around 4,600 individuals.
The decline in activity is not uniform, as noted by on-chain experts. Over the past three months, the number of weekly active developers in Ethereum has decreased by 34%, down to 2,811 individuals; in Solana, it has dropped by 40%, to 942 individuals; and in Base, it has fallen by 52%, to 378 individuals. This is noteworthy considering that Base is reported by Artemis to be one of the fastest-growing networks.
New blockchains, which gained interest during last year’s bullish trend, have been the hardest hit, analysts observed. The Aptos network has lost about 60% of its developers, code submissions in BNB Chain have decreased by 85%, and activity in Celo has diminished by 52%.
The only category that continues to see growth is cryptocurrency wallet infrastructure. Here, the number of weekly active developers has risen by 6%, reaching 308 individuals.
The composition of specialists is changing. The number of developers with over two years of experience has increased by approximately 27% since last year, now accounting for 70% of activity in major blockchains. There has been a notable outflow among external specialists and newcomers with less than 12 months of experience—this group has shrunk by 58% over the year, according to on-chain researchers.
Historically, developer activity is linked to market cycles; during the onset of a new bullish trend, programmers typically return to blockchain, representatives from Artemis pointed out. They have observed a new trend—an influx of specialists into the artificial intelligence industry. Currently, there are over 4.3 million AI-related repositories published on the GitHub platform. The number of development kits for applications based on large language models has surged by 178%, exceeding 1.1 million. Generative AI projects attract over 1 million participants each month.
Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin acknowledged that his network has yet to deliver the tangible improvements many blockchain technology supporters anticipated. It has played only a minor role in addressing issues related to digital privacy and personal freedom. Buterin compared his blockchain to other tools that, in his view, have achieved significantly greater advancements.
