Bitcoin Depot reports a breach resulting in a loss of $3.6 million., 2026/04/09 12:05:27

One of the largest U.S. cryptocurrency kiosk operators, Bitcoin Depot, has reported a breach resulting in a loss of $3.6 million, with the attacker gaining access to internal systems and withdrawing approximately 50.9 bitcoins from corporate wallets.
The company stated that on March 23, the perpetrator accessed the credentials of the settlement account. Following the detection of the incident, the firm initiated response procedures, engaged external cybersecurity experts, and notified law enforcement authorities. This information was included in a document submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Bitcoin Depot emphasized that customer funds and personal data remained unaffected, and external experts have been involved in the investigation. The company estimates that insurance payouts will partially cover the losses.
In its annual report for March, the company also noted “significant deficiencies” in its internal control system.
Earlier, cybersecurity specialists from CertiK reported an increase in hacking incidents within the cryptocurrency sector. In March, there were 46 recorded incidents with a total loss of $39.8 million, marking the highest figure since November 2024.
