A woman fell victim to fraudsters and chose to invest 1 million rubles in cryptocurrency., 2026/03/16 18:32:22

A 49-year-old resident of the Pribaikalsky District in Buryatia fell victim to fraudsters who promised returns from cryptocurrency investments. The woman intended to invest over 1 million rubles in a crypto project but managed to send only 129,700 rubles to the criminals, as reported by local police.
In February, the Russian woman came across an advertisement online that promised high earnings from investments in digital assets. She contacted an individual who claimed to be a broker and provided her with some analysis. Their communication continued via a messaging app, where the individual persuaded her to invest money in cryptocurrency for potential returns. Under this influence, the woman transferred the initial amount of 129,700 rubles to the fraudsters.
Subsequently, the scammer urged the Buryat woman to make a larger investment to gain access to a so-called “big deal.” Believing this, the victim attempted to send an additional 890,000 rubles to the fake crypto platform. However, the bank blocked the transaction and the account, deeming the transfer suspicious.
The woman went to the main bank office in Ulan-Ude to unblock her account. She informed the bank staff that the funds were needed for home repairs. However, her explanation raised suspicions among the clerks, who reported the situation to the police. Following their interaction with the victim, law enforcement initiated a criminal case.
Previously, a 37-year-old woman from Nizhnekamsk lost 3.6 million rubles after investing in a fictitious crypto project. Soon after, access to her funds was blocked by the platform under the pretext of a verification process. To regain access, the fraudsters demanded an additional payment.
A resident of Kostroma also decided to invest in digital assets, but her attempt to profit from cryptocurrencies resulted in a loss of 1.1 million rubles.
