The police in Norilsk have identified an underground miner. The individual rented a space and set up equipment there, as well as altered the operation of the meters. The damage from the illegal use of electricity amounted to 7.5 million rubles.
According to a press release from the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Krasnoyarsk Territory, an employee of the energy supply company in Norilsk reported the potential theft of electricity in August 2025. Signs of unauthorized consumption were discovered at the location.
Police officials seized 96 devices used for cryptocurrency mining. The electricity meters were sent for examination, which confirmed tampering aimed at distorting data on electricity consumption.
The suspect is currently under a travel restriction. He faces up to five years in prison under part 2 of Article 165 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (Causing property damage through deception or abuse of trust).
Previously, another underground miner was convicted in Omsk. The damage amounted to 12 million rubles, and the court imposed a suspended sentence of three years and one month.
