A study by the Bitcoin Policy Institute found that 22 out of 36 tested artificial intelligence models selected Bitcoin as their primary financial asset. None of the neural networks favored fiat currency as a fundamental tool for savings and financial transactions.

Researchers evaluated models created by companies such as Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, DeepSeek, xAI, and MiniMax. The neural networks were tasked with analyzing various scenarios for the use of money—savings, payments, and settlements. Each model was treated as an independent economic agent, allowing it to autonomously select financial instruments without predefined options.

In the simulated scenarios, Bitcoin was most frequently chosen for long-term savings—36% of the time. Additionally, in 30.9% of scenarios, the leading cryptocurrency was prioritized for payments. In contrast, were more commonly used as a medium of exchange and for settlements, being selected in 53.2% and 43% of cases, respectively.

Preferences varied significantly based on the model developer. The neural networks from Anthropic showed the highest inclination towards Bitcoin, selecting it in 68% of instances on average. This was followed by DeepSeek models (51.7%) and Google (43%). The xAI models favored Bitcoin in 39.2% of scenarios, MiniMax in 34.9%, while OpenAI’s models selected it only 25.9% of the time.

Distinctions were also observed among specific products. The Claude models (Anthropic), DeepSeek, and MiniMax were more likely to choose Bitcoin compared to other cryptocurrencies, whereas GPT (OpenAI), Grok (xAI), and Gemini (Google) tended to prefer stablecoins.

Previously, Changpeng Zhao, co-founder and former head of the cryptocurrency exchange Binance, stated that cryptocurrencies could become the primary payment method for artificial intelligence systems, as blockchain serves as a natural infrastructure for the interaction of neural networks.
