Unstoppable Domains introduces instant messaging feature utilizing XMTP

Unstoppable Domains (UD) has introduced an instant messaging feature for holders of Web3 usernames, as announced by principal engineer Aaron Quirk on August 23. Individuals with .crypto, .wallet, .polygon, or other UD-registered usernames can now communicate with each other across various applications utilizing XMTP, including the UD iOS app and website, Coinbase Wallet, and Lens protocol applications like Lenster and Buttrfly. The announcement specified that the Android version of UD will not support messaging at launch but will include this functionality in the near future.
Unstoppable Messaging is here.
Built on top of @xmtp_, now you can easily send and receive DMs with your Web3 domain.

The new messaging feature utilizes the extensible message transport protocol (XMTP), an independent protocol, to ensure messages are fully encrypted and sent to recipients. This guarantees that messages will remain accessible even if UD were to discontinue operations in the future. “Your messages will be preserved and accessible to you no matter what happens to Unstoppable,” the announcement indicated.
Web3 usernames have existed since 2017, enabling crypto users to link their crypto addresses—long strings of characters representing accounts—with more memorable names. For instance, the complex address 0xd8dA6BF26964aF9D7eEd9e03E53415D37aA96045 can be simplified to “Vitalik.eth.”
Historically, these crypto usernames have primarily been utilized for receiving payments. However, several projects are working to broaden their functionality to encompass additional applications, including messaging. For example, Coinbase Wallet launched an instant messaging feature on July 12, allowing users to communicate with each other using their .eth or .cb.id usernames. This Coinbase Wallet feature was also integrated with the social media protocol Lens, due to the shared use of XMTP by both projects.

Nonetheless, this shared system did not apply to usernames registered through Unstoppable Domains, such as those ending in .crypto or .polygon. According to Quirk’s announcement, this issue has now been addressed. Users of Lens applications or Coinbase Wallet can now exchange messages using their Unstoppable Domains usernames alongside other methods.
Quirk also mentioned that the company will soon introduce an integration with Push Protocol, enabling username holders to opt-in for notifications from Web3 projects. These projects will have the capability to message users through the Unstoppable Domains website or app.
On April 26, Unstoppable Domains also formed a partnership with Binance.US, allowing its users to register names ending in .BinanceUS. Additionally, it reached an agreement with competitor Ethereum Name Service (ENS) on July 17, permitting ENS .eth names to be sold in the UD store for the first time.
