Ethereum layer 2 zkEVM 'Scroll' announces mainnet deployment.

Scroll, a new player in the zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine (zkEVM) sector focused on enhancing blockchain , has officially announced the launch of its mainnet.

The Scroll team shared the news in a post on Oct. 17, indicating that current applications and developer toolkits on Ethereum can now transition to this new scaling solution.

“Everything operates seamlessly from the start,” stated the Scroll team.

After more than two years of development, we are excited to announce the launch of Scroll Mainnet.

A zkEVM solution like Scroll’s is designed to offer reduced transaction fees while increasing throughput for decentralized applications on Ethereum.

This is achieved by aggregating thousands of transactions off-chain into a single one, then submitting a proof that includes a concise data summary to Ethereum’s mainnet.

Blockchain data indicates that Scroll had kept the information about its mainnet going live since Oct. 8 under wraps — the date when the first smart contract was deployed on the Scroll mainnet, as per Etherscan data.

Scroll mentioned that the mainnet launch followed 15 months of thorough testing and security evaluations across three distinct testnets.

“Our bridge and rollup contracts underwent audits by OpenZeppelin and Zellic,” Scroll noted. Its zkEVM circuits were assessed by Trail of Bits, Zellic, and KALOS.

Throughout its three testnets, over 450,000 were deployed, facilitating more than 90 million transactions across 9 million blocks. The firm also reported the generation of 280,000 ZK-proofs.

<pApproximately a month prior, Scroll co-founder Ye Zhang informed Cointelegraph that Scroll would initially launch with centralized features but intends to progressively decentralize over time.

“We will have a centralized sequencer and the central approver button,” Zhang explained. He also mentioned that there is a plan to eliminate that button eventually.

“We have a roadmap […] To address the single point of failure and to encourage the community to develop improved proving hardware.”

Zhang stated that the Scroll team will also propose several initiatives for community discussion regarding the best path forward for Scroll.

Founded in 2021, Scroll aims to be more community-oriented. Other zkEVM solutions striving to enhance Ethereum’s scalability include Polygon, zkSync, StarkWare, and Immutable.

Jordi Baylina, technical lead of Polygon Hermez zkEVM, recently told Cointelegraph that such competition within the zkEVM arena will only strengthen the Ethereum ecosystem:

“Having various projects contributes a wealth of experience, and it’s also a means to test different strategies, methods of handling issues, or solving problems,” he remarked.
