University of Wyoming Establishes Initial Bitcoin Research Institute0

The University of Wyoming (UW) has launched the UW Bitcoin Research Institute, the first academic institution focused on Bitcoin research.

This initiative is designed to offer academics, journalists, policymakers, and the general public access to high-quality research on Bitcoin.

Dr. Bradley Rettler, an Associate Professor of Philosophy and the author of “Resistance Money: A Philosophical Case for Bitcoin,” has been named the first director, as announced by Rettler during the Genesis Stage at the Bitcoin 2024 Conference in Nashville.

The institute’s goal is to enhance the quality and influence of Bitcoin research by establishing faculty roles dedicated to Bitcoin studies, incentivizing and rewarding exemplary academic research on Bitcoin, motivating emerging scholars to engage in Bitcoin research projects, and offering workshops on relevant papers and publications.

Additionally, it will facilitate connections among researchers interested in Bitcoin and provide peer-reviewed research for journalists, policymakers, and the public.

The current landscape of academic Bitcoin research lacks high standards, prompting the institute to tackle these challenges by generating and disseminating more precise and rigorous academic studies on Bitcoin. The institute will strive to make high-quality, evidence-based research available to everyone.

The University of Wyoming is well-positioned to spearhead this effort due to its interdisciplinary academic collaborations, access to renewable energy resources, and a favorable legislative and regulatory framework.

The institute will also partner with various university departments, including philosophy and economics, the School of Computing, and the Center for Blockchain and Digital Innovation.
