UK Plans Expanding Team to Combat Crypto-Related Crimes

  • The team will collaborate with the London police and a surveillance unit.
  • Compensation starts at $44,145 (£34,672) and goes up to $48,782 (£38,314).

The UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) is recruiting four senior investigators to join its Complex Financial Crime Team to probe offenses involving digital assets. The role involves investigating organized criminal groups’ use of blockchain technology for high-end crypto fraud and money laundering. The new team will collaborate with the Metropolitan Police and a surveillance unit.

Key responsibilities include working with other investigators, intelligence analysts, and data teams to solve complex cases by analyzing raw data and evidence.

Candidates must hold a Level 2 certification in the government’s Professionalising Investigation Program or an equivalent qualification in crime investigation. The salary ranges from $44,145 (£34,672) to $48,782 (£38,314), plus additional government benefits.

Controlling Rising Crime Rate

The United Kingdom has been working to establish a specialized crypto crime investigation unit. The NCA demonstrated increased interest in crypto assets by launching a digital assets unit on January 4. This move was driven by rising monetary losses from crypto-related crimes in the UK in 2022. According to the UK’s cybercrime and fraud reporting system, crypto fraudsters stole at least $287 million in 2022.

The NCA has consistently sought to strengthen its crypto division with additional personnel. On July 26, the agency advertised for financial investigations managers. Under the Proceeds of Crime Act, which governs the confiscation and redistribution of criminal proceeds, these investigators will manage inquiries into criminal activity involving cryptocurrencies and digital assets.
