Key points:
- MetaMask is broadening the availability of its blockchain-based debit card in the U.S. with a national launch following a year-long pilot.
- The non-custodial card is now usable wherever Mastercard is accepted, including compatibility with digital wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay.
- It enters a competitive landscape that already includes various alternatives, such as cards on the Visa network.
MetaMask is extending the availability of its blockchain debit card in the U.S. after a year-long evaluation and gaining permission to operate in New York for the first time.
The U.S. testing phase followed a pilot in Europe and the U.K. that commenced in 2024. The rollout features enhancements aimed at integrating cryptocurrency payments into everyday transactions, as announced by MetaMask on Thursday.
“We designed the MetaMask Card to make crypto disappear. Not go away, but become so seamlessly woven into daily life that the line between onchain and offchain fades away entirely,” stated Gal Eldar, a product lead at MetaMask, in a press release provided to CoinDesk.
The MetaMask Card, created in collaboration with payment leader Mastercard and crypto payment facilitator Baanx, joins a competitive market that already has several players, including crypto exchanges Coinbase (COIN) and Crypto.com, though many necessitate users to deposit their cryptocurrency on the card issuers’ platforms.
MetaMask initiated a limited rollout of its blockchain debit card to several thousand users in the European Union and U.K. in August 2024, allowing customers to make purchases using USDC, USDT, and wETH held on the layer-2 network Linea, an Ethereum-based blockchain developed by Consensys, the parent company of MetaMask. The U.S. pilot began in December 2024.
MetaMask states that the card is now functional wherever Mastercard is accepted, with support for digital wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay, and it offers onchain cashback rewards and yield options on unspent balances through DeFi protocols. The company is also providing a premium MetaMask Metal Card, available for an annual fee of $199.
“We’ve seen tens of thousands of users globally utilize it for everything from morning coffee to engagement rings, and now we’re thrilled to bring that to U.S. users, including locations like New York that previously haven’t had access,” Eldar noted in the press release.
