Meta to Introduce Twitter Competitor 'Thread' on July 61

  • A countdown site launched by Meta indicates that the release will take place on Thursday.
  • Pre-orders for Threads are now available on the Apple App Store prior to its launch.

Just a few days following Twitter’s “rate limit” incident, which temporarily restricted the number of tweets users could view daily, Meta plans to introduce its new competitor, Threads, on July 6. A countdown site initiated by Meta suggests that the platform, which is closely linked with the Instagram photo and video-sharing service, will be launched on Thursday.

Pre-orders for Threads can now be made on the Apple App Store ahead of its anticipated release on July 6. Despite what could be an ideal launch period, the app appears to have garnered limited interest, particularly among Twitter’s crypto community.

Collection of User Data

Additionally, concerns have been raised regarding data mining, privacy, and the app’s standalone viability. The developer of the Threads app, Instagram, would have access to a wide range of user information, including financial data and identification details, as highlighted by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey.

However, experts responding to Dorsey’s tweet assert that Twitter possesses nearly the same rights as Threads and collects similar data. Others have expressed skepticism about the app’s sustainability, noting that previous independent applications launched by Meta have either been shut down or had their features merged into other services.

Furthermore, the standalone Threads app will support ActivityPub, the decentralized social networking protocol that powers the Twitter rival Mastodon.

In the wake of Twitter’s rate limit issue, which has temporarily restricted the number of posts a user can view in a single day, Meta is preparing to launch Threads. The new service will facilitate the importation of a user’s Instagram followers and the accounts they follow, thereby eliminating the need to start from scratch.
