On Christmas Day, scammers managed to steal $3 million in cryptocurrencies by utilizing Google Ads to promote fraudulent websites that employ wallet-draining software known as MS Drainer.

A recent report dated Dec. 21 indicated that in 2023, scammers had utilized MS Drainer to pilfer $59 million in cryptocurrency.

As reported by Scam Sniffer, the perpetrators leveraged Google Ads to deceive cryptocurrency users into visiting counterfeit versions of platforms, such as Zapper, Lido, Stargate, DefiLlama, Orbiter Finance, and Radient.

The security firm identified new incidents linked to phishing sites associated with the same attackers’ addresses in their scam database on Dec. 25.

However, Scam Sniffer has yet to receive a response from the platform.

The recent phishing thefts serve as a reminder for cryptocurrency users to meticulously verify the legitimacy of websites and transactions that their Web3 wallets are authorizing.

“Phishing scams are currently the primary threat to users. To mitigate this risk, the only action we can take as users is to carefully verify each signature request,” remarked Scam Sniffer’s spokesperson.

In its latest report on the use of the wallet drainer, Scam Sniffer discovered 10,072 fraudulent sites that utilized MS Drainer throughout 2023.

This software has been responsible for stealing $58.98 million in cryptocurrency from over 63,000 victims, according to a Dune Analytics dashboard established to monitor it.
