Four Individuals Detained in Bitcoin Abduction and Homicide Investigation: Ukrainian Authorities0

  • In the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv, four individuals have been detained on allegations of kidnapping, robbing, and murdering a 29-year-old man after coercing him to transfer Bitcoin valued at around $170,000.

A man was abducted and killed for Bitcoin worth $170,000 in Kyiv, Ukraine. The assailants subsequently buried his remains in a forest.

Ukraine remains deeply engaged in a conflict with Russia, which has left its populace in challenging circumstances.

As reported by Online.ua, an independent Ukrainian news outlet, the average salary in Kyiv is approximately 21,800 UAH ($530). This indicates that the $170,000 worth of Bitcoin taken represents more than 500 times the average income for residents of the capital.

The National Police of Ukraine stated in a press release—translated by Decrypt—that the suspects located the victim’s address after learning he possessed Bitcoin valued at 7 million Ukrainian hryvnias (UAH), or about $170,000.

According to police, as the victim was arriving home around midnight, the suspects assaulted him and forcibly pulled him into a vehicle, subsequently taking him to an abandoned structure in Kyiv. There, they compelled him to transfer his Bitcoin to their wallet.

Once they had acquired the Bitcoin, authorities report that the suspects strangled and murdered the 29-year-old.

In an effort to evade capture, police indicate that the assailants transported the victim’s body to the forest for burial. They then altered the license plates and appearance of their vehicle before converting the stolen Bitcoin into cash.

Law enforcement was notified of the man’s abduction after neighbors reported hearing screams and witnessing a man being forced into a car.

A police investigation was promptly initiated, with all local police units—including the Rapid Operational Response Unit—conducting searches for the kidnappers.

The four detained individuals, aged between 24 and 29, are currently in custody facing charges of “robbery attack, kidnapping and murder of a person for selfish reasons and concealment of a crime,” as per the translated press release.

The accused have not been granted bail and are facing the possibility of life imprisonment.
