Fedi Introduces a Bitcoin Operating System for Communities

- The Community Superapp, Fedi, has introduced a Bitcoin operating system that integrates financial services with various social applications to empower independent and sustainable communities.
After a year of development, the “Community Superapp” Fedi officially launched yesterday and revealed intentions to open source its freedom technology stack.
Initially presented in 2022, Fedi is a financial platform aimed at providing individuals with access to financial resources by harnessing the strength of local communities.
Designed with a focus on privacy, the launch of Fedi marks a significant advancement in fostering grassroots economic growth and personal liberty.
The Fedimint consensus protocol enables community leaders to manage shared resources, uphold the sovereignty of participants, and encourage social opportunities.
“A single software solution that can replace numerous traditional applications with safe and secure alternatives driven not by corporations, but by communities.”
Yesterday’s launch emphasized the individuals behind this initiative and their distinctive vision for the project.
In a presentation available on Fedi’s website, the company showcases how various partners, including humanitarian organizations, are investigating methods to enhance community sustainability through the application.
“Those of us who possess the care, vision, and determination to make it happen,” states the company’s co-founder Obi Nwosu.
In The Image Of Its Communities
At the heart of Fedi is the belief that individuals should have greater control over whom they trust with their finances and data. In Madeira, Portugal, a non-profit organization is connecting entrepreneurs, merchants, and Bitcoin enthusiasts through the Fedi application.
Free Madeira operates a federation that provides various services to support the local Bitcoin economy.
Everything revolves around the community and its members. While services such as custody, payments, and messaging have traditionally been managed by corporations and opaque service providers, Fedi empowers neighbors, groups, and local associations to utilize its technology for the benefit of others.
In contrast to other Bitcoin protocols that aim to eliminate trust, this project seeks to enhance the potential of real-world relationships and connections among its users.
“We acknowledge that the most advanced technology is community. Communities are inherently creative, innovative, and resourceful. All they require is a tool to elevate them and unlock their potential,” shared Mary Imasuen, Global Marketing Manager, during the project’s virtual event.
Operators, referred to as guardians, can personalize their community’s experience, enabling each federation to adapt the platform to meet its participants’ needs.
For Chef Lopez in Togo, the application is utilized to initiate new microlending projects that enhance access to agricultural resources in his area.
Farming cooperatives organize through the Fedi application and pool resources for designated representatives to acquire the necessary supplies to sustain their operations.
To assist in onboarding these communities, Fedi also announced the “Fedi Order,” a group of technically skilled individuals deployed worldwide to aid in the process.
A Radically New Approach
Fedi is built on an innovative technology architecture based on the Fedimint protocol, originally developed by Bitcoin developer and Fedi co-founder Eric Sirion.
Recognizing the challenges posed by existing self-custody solutions and being aware of the risks linked to centralized custodians, Fedi presents an alternative known as “community custody.”
Fedi depends on a federation of guardians to share control of its members’ assets and eliminates reliance on a single party through threshold signatures.
Consider it a community multi-signature wallet. To enhance existing custodial solutions, the project employs Chaumian eCash, a privacy-preserving form of digital currency that represents claims on the community’s bitcoin reserves.
This ensures that transactions among community members remain confidential and protects balances from being disclosed to outsiders.
Before the advent of Bitcoin and blockchains, computer scientist Nick Szabo identified the potential of utilizing micro-organizations to secure financial operations, a concept he termed “Secure Property Titles with Owner Authority.”
More recently, the idea of federations gained traction through Blockstream’s implementation of the Liquid sidechain.
In addition to private, rapid, and highly scalable payments, Fedi’s consensus system establishes a flexible platform capable of unlocking various use cases.
Thanks to its high-performance infrastructure, the protocol enables participants to deploy modular “freedom tools” such as a chat interface that supports encrypted messaging, private groups, and social payments.
“Fedi mods” can be utilized by developers and third-party applications to introduce new features to the platform and distribute them across its network of federations.
“Mods are unique web applications that integrate seamlessly with Fedi and customize your experience. They enable you to perform tasks such as topping up your phone, saving money with friends, and purchasing gift cards.”
More than just a wallet, Fedi serves as an operating system for the communities it supports, empowering them, often for the first time, to engage in the digital economy.
Notable features introduced during yesterday’s presentation include the capability to conduct offline payments and “Stable Balance,” which allows users’ balances to be pegged to their local currency.
The Fedi app is currently available on iOS and Android. Community leaders and organizations interested in collaborating with Fedi are encouraged to register for the program. A grant is available to assist federations in their development.
