  • The tourism minister tweeted that one million visitors have arrived in the country so far this year.

As reported by El Salvador’s tourism minister, the country is experiencing an unprecedented surge in visitor numbers. This announcement is part of a broader public relations effort by the Central American nation to transform its reputation from that of a lawless area to a destination known for Bitcoin and surfing.

President Nayib Bukele, the tech-savvy millennial leader of El Salvador, shared a cinematic video on Thursday to declare that the country has gone an entire year without a homicide.

El Salvador Leading the Way

A dramatic voiceover states, “El Salvador today is indisputably the safest country in Latin America.” According to AFP, this statistic refers to “the total number of days without murders since 2019” rather than a tally of how many days have elapsed without a murder.

Morena Valdez, the tourism minister, tweeted that one million tourists have visited the country this year. Recently, El Salvador has gained popularity as a destination on the “gringo trail,” which was previously frequented only by dedicated surfers, as its status among the world’s most dangerous countries has varied.

With at least 6,640 homicides recorded in 2015, it was the most violent nation in the Americas. El Salvador made headlines internationally when it declared Bitcoin as legal tender in 2021. Its unconventional leader has engaged in a Bitcoin buying spree, and the government has required that all businesses accept Bitcoin as a form of payment.

Through a significant crackdown on El Salvador’s notorious criminal gangs, President Bukele has initiated a turnaround in the country. He aims to establish the nation as a technological hub. The Salvadoran populace appears to support these changes: murder rates have decreased, and Bukele consistently enjoys favorable polling results.
