Creator of Bitcoin Ordinals suggests modifications to the inscription numbering system.

The creator and lead developer of Bitcoin Ordinals, Casey Rodarmor, has recently suggested modifications to the protocol’s numbering system with the intention of streamlining the project’s codebase.

Since the inception of the Ordinals protocol, each nonfungible token (NFT) generated through Ordinals has been assigned a distinct inscription number. These numbers functioned similarly to serial numbers and have been a crucial component of the digital art minted within the protocol.

I suppose the secret is out! In summary, I believe that the attempt to maintain stable inscription numbers has not been worthwhile, resulting in convoluted code and hindered development, as new modifications must be excessively and often awkwardly cautious not to alter the numbers of previous… https://t.co/SsEqjdtZFB

Nonetheless, Rodarmor contends that the effort to keep inscription numbers stable has resulted in “convoluted code and hindered development.” Consequently, the protocol’s lead developer has proposed to make inscription numbers “permanently unstable,” indicating that the numbering system assigning unique identifiers to inscriptions created on the Bitcoin network will be deprioritized.

Rodarmor stated that this change will simplify the protocol’s codebase and facilitate future modifications to the protocol. He also clarified that while inscription numbers will change, they will not be entirely eliminated. Rodarmor emphasized that new inscription numbers will be similar to the previous ones but may vary by 1%.

While many expressed support for the change, others highlighted that users had invested significant amounts to obtain specific numbers and would be impacted by the reorganization of these numbers. Despite this, a community member pointed out that those who value the numbering of the inscriptions can still categorize the collectibles by their timestamps.

Bitcoin Ordinals are artifacts that enable inscriptions into a satoshi, the smallest unit of Bitcoin (). The protocol was launched in January 2023, with thousands of inscriptions minted on the BTC network since then. On August 21, the NFT-like protocol represented 84.9% of all activity within the Bitcoin network.
