What to know:

  • Charles Hoskinson mentioned that Midnight will not specifically seek out users from Monero and ZCash, referring to them as a "different demographic" that is already highly invested in privacy.
  • Midnight intends to focus on "billions of individuals who are unaware they require privacy" by providing default privacy measures instead of optional features.
  • Hoskinson contended that privacy should not be viewed as a binary concept, criticizing the on/off mentality of Monero and ZCash.

Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson stated that the privacy-centric blockchain Midnight does not plan to attract privacy enthusiasts from the ZCash and Monero communities to the Midnight network.

"You don't attempt to bring anyone from Monero or ZCash over," he remarked during a question-and-answer session at Consensus Hong Kong on Thursday.

"They will certainly join in their own time, but they belong to a different demographic," he explained. "These are individuals who prioritize privacy daily, and they are significant and valued, but our target is the billions who are unaware of their need for privacy and will receive it by default."

Midnight announced on Thursday that its mainnet is set to launch in March as a partner chain to Cardano.

Hoskinson subsequently asserted that the concept of privacy is more nuanced than what is often portrayed by the Monero and ZCash communities.

"What Monero and ZCash have been trying to persuade individuals is that it's like a light switch. We're private. The switch is on. Everyone else is not. The switch is off. That's not the reality," he said.
