British Court Approves Craig Wright’s Appeal in Bitcoin Copyright Case

- Craig Wright has asserted his identity as Bitcoin’s creator since 2016.
- The trial is set to begin at the start of 2024.
On July 20, a British court approved an appeal, granting Craig Wright the opportunity to present evidence in court to substantiate his assertion that the Bitcoin file format is sufficiently defined to warrant copyright protection.
Wright, who has maintained that he is the creator of Bitcoin since 2016, initiated a lawsuit against 13 Bitcoin Core developers and several companies, including Coinbase, for purportedly violating his copyright concerning the Bitcoin white paper, its file format, and the Bitcoin blockchain database.
This ruling reversed a previous decision made by a lower court in February, which determined that Wright had not provided adequate proof of fixation (the initial recording of work) regarding the Bitcoin file format.
Trial to Commence in 2024
Additionally, the Bitcoin Legal Defense Fund (BLDF), which serves as the legal representation for the developers, argues that Wright has not presented sufficient evidence to establish that he is the elusive figure behind the Bitcoin white paper and database.
BLDF remarked:
“Wright has claimed to be Satoshi since at least 2016 without providing a shred of evidence to back up this claim.”
The trial is scheduled to commence at the beginning of 2024. Users are permitted to utilize Bitcoin’s source code in their own projects, even if those projects are proprietary, as the Bitcoin code is open-sourced and freely available under a license from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Nevertheless, Wright has asserted that the Bitcoin Core developers constitute a “Bitcoin Partnership,” a singular entity with authority over the Bitcoin network. The mere consideration of his claims by British courts, according to BLDF, is quite concerning.
