Billionaire Investor Mark Cuban Loses $870,000 from Crypto Wallet0

  • Cuban confirmed that he had indeed accessed MetaMask for the first time in several months.
  • On September 15, a blockchain analyst named Wazz first detected the breach.

Mark Cuban, the billionaire entrepreneur, reportedly had one of his hot wallets drained of approximately $870k in cryptocurrency. On September 15 at around 8 pm UTC, a blockchain analyst named Wazz first identified the breach after noticing unusual activity in one of Cuban’s wallets that had remained inactive for over five months.

The transaction log on Etherscan indicates that a significant quantity of tokens was unexpectedly withdrawn from the wallet within a brief span of 10 minutes. These tokens included , , and Lido Staked Ether (stETH). Wazz initially suspected that Cuban was simply reallocating funds when he observed that an additional $2 million in USDC had been withdrawn and sent to a different wallet.

Waiting to Strike

A few hours later, however, Cuban confirmed that he had indeed logged into MetaMask for the first time in months, and he made some indirect comments suggesting that a hacker may have been poised to act.

Cuban also acknowledged that he was responsible for the $2 million USDC transfer by stating that he had moved any remaining funds to Coinbase Custody. Community members were quick to assert that the hack was likely due to Cuban’s actions, rather than a result of hackers observing his online activity.

Since the funds were dispatched from the wallet without passing through any intermediaries, some have speculated that Cuban might have inadvertently signed a malicious transaction, while others have suggested that his private key was compromised.
