Apple Considers Removing Damus Due to Bitcoin Tipping Functionality
- Apple has demanded an update from Damus within 14 days of the communication date.
- Damus asserts that it does not sell digital products or offer tools for such transactions.
Damus, a decentralized social networking application, faces the risk of being removed from the Apple App Store unless its developers modify the application to align with Apple’s regulations. A tweet from the project indicated that Apple has requested an update from Damus within 14 days of the communication to ensure the app remains available on the App Store.
The warning pertains to the “zaps” feature of Damus, which enables users to earn bitcoin through posts. Zaps can be understood primarily as tips. Damus operates on the Nostr protocol, which facilitates rapid, nearly free micropayments via the Lightning network. The application includes a Bitcoin payment and tipping widget supported by the Layer 2 Lightning Network.
According to Apple:
“We noticed that your app allows users to send ‘tips’ associated with receiving content from digital content creators using a mechanism other than in-app purchase.”
No Other Option Than to Comply
William Casarin, a core developer of Damus, stated that it is essential to remove the zaps feature to maintain the app’s presence on the App Store, and that “we will likely do” so. Damus maintains that it does not sell digital products or provide tools for such transactions.
The platform expressed:
“It simply has a tip button for facilitating p2p [peer-to-peer] transactions like Venmo or CashApp.”
Damus claimed that if Apple were to remove the Damus app, it would result in “a dead platform for Bitcoin applications trying to innovate on lightning.” The Nostr-based Damus was launched earlier in February this year, branded as “the social network you control.” Nostr is a social network protocol supported by Jack Dorsey, the former CEO of Twitter.
