Hong Kong’s role

The narrative

CoinDesk’s annual Consensus Hong Kong conference is set to begin this Wednesday with an address from Hong Kong Chief Executive John KC Lee.

Why it matters

Hong Kong is taking on a noteworthy role at the crossroads of financial services between the global East and West. CoinDesk will investigate this role during Consensus.

Breaking it down

On the first day of Consensus, we will hear from Financial Secretary Paul Chan and Securities and Futures Commission Chief Executive Julia Leung, discussing the development of real-world asset tokenization, , and changing payment systems along with exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

Our lineup of speakers will feature regulators and politicians from various countries, with panels examining the approaches of both regulators and industry participants to the sector — a dialogue that has been ongoing at Consensus but continues to progress.

Topics such as privacy, artificial intelligence, decentralized finance, and trading behaviors will also be featured on various stages throughout the conference.

This week promises to be busy: SEC Chair Paul Atkins is scheduled to testify before the House Financial Services and Senate Banking Committees. While the hearings will focus on SEC oversight in general, discussions regarding crypto and Atkins’ initiatives to formulate regulations for the sector are anticipated.

Additionally, the White House is organizing yet another meeting with representatives from the crypto and banking industries. Specific details are still pending.
