More than 75% of worldwide organizations expect to experience a successful cyber attack in the coming year.
Approximately 78% of organizations globally foresee a successful cyber attack occurring within the next year, as indicated by Trend Micro’s recent report published on May 4.
This figure is particularly noteworthy given that the report also assessed the cyber risk level to have improved to moderate from elevated for the first time, according to Trend Micro.
Anticipating attacks
The report gathered insights from IT security professionals across more than 3,500 institutions worldwide. Among all respondents, 78% expressed that they expected a successful cyber attack within the next 12 months. Although this figure remains significant despite the improving global cyber risk, it represents a 7% decline from the first half of 2022.
<pApproximately 70% of respondents indicated they were likely to face a breach involving customer data in the upcoming year. Additionally, 69% mentioned that a breach of critical data could occur within the next year.
Global cyber risk is improving
Trend Micro assesses the global cyber risk using a metric they developed known as the Cyber Risk Index (CRI). The CRI scale ranges from -10 to +10, where -10 signifies the highest risk and +10 denotes the safest environment.
The CRI consists of the cyber preparedness index and the cyber threat index. The former reflects an organization’s current ability to defend against cyber attacks, while the latter evaluates the state of cyber threats at the time of assessment.
The report states that the CRI index has improved to “moderate” from “elevated risk” for the first time since Trend Micro began publishing these reports. Furthermore, it is also the first instance where the CRI score has appeared on the positive side of the scale at +0.01, compared to -0.15 in the first half of 2022.

Jon Clay, Trend Micro’s Vice President of threat intelligence, remarked on these findings, stating:
“For the first time since we’ve been running these surveys, we saw the global cyber-risk index not only improve but move into positive territory at +0.01.
It means that organizations may be taking steps to improve their cyber-preparedness.”
When analyzing the CRI score by region, Europe and Asia-Pacific were positioned on the positive side of the scale with +0.12 and +0.05, respectively.
In contrast, North America and Latin/South America were recorded in the negative with -0.10 and -0.03, respectively.
