French Authorities Examine Worldcoin Regarding Biometric Data Collection0

  • Worldcoin has established registration centers globally to gather biometric data.
  • The French data protection authority CNIL has announced the initiation of an investigation.

Worldcoin (WLD), a cryptocurrency initiative centered on digital identity and founded by Sam Altman, co-creator of ChatGPT, is reportedly under scrutiny by French officials. The investigation has been triggered by concerns regarding the project’s collection of biometric data.

The overarching aim of Worldcoin is to create a digital identification platform that empowers individuals, utilizing biometric data such as iris scans. To facilitate identity verification, Worldcoin has launched registration centers around the globe, featuring a distinctive device referred to as an “orb.”

Concerns Over Data Acquisition

As individuals approach the orb, their faces may be scanned to gather biometric data, specifically for iris recognition. This information is utilized to generate digital IDs that are intended for exclusive use by the individual.

While the Worldcoin approach may initially appear appealing, it raises significant privacy and ethical concerns that warrant careful consideration. A report by Reuters indicated that the French data protection authority CNIL expressed that the method “seems questionable, as do the conditions for storing biometric data.”

CNIL has confirmed the commencement of its investigation and has determined that the German state of Bavaria holds jurisdiction over the case. Consequently, Bavarian authorities are now leading the investigation with assistance from CNIL.

Concerns regarding the potential risks associated with the mishandling of biometric data are evident in the statements from authorities. Following the launch of Worldcoin, the UK’s data regulator announced its intention to investigate the cryptocurrency as well.

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has expressed similar concerns regarding the potential for misuse and privacy violations. The ongoing inquiry into Worldcoin’s collection of biometric data underscores the vital significance of privacy and data security in today’s digital landscape.
