Dogecoin Co-Creator Reports $500 Theft in Japan, Shares Feelings of Embarrassment

- Billy Markus, the co-creator of Dogecoin, experienced a theft of $500 during his trip to Japan.
- He conveyed his disappointment regarding both the theft and the cultural embarrassment, identifying as a Japanese-American.
- Markus inadvertently left his fanny pack containing the cash in a public restroom that featured luxurious amenities.
Billy Markus, who co-founded the Dogecoin cryptocurrency in 2013, disclosed on Twitter this week that he had $500 taken from him while visiting Japan. He expressed equal concern over the theft and the cultural embarrassment it caused him as a Japanese-American.
In a series of tweets, Markus detailed that he mistakenly left his fanny pack with the cash in a public restroom after being distracted by its upscale features. Upon returning a few minutes later, he found the fanny pack still there, but the money was missing.
i had about $500 stolen from me in japan, and the interesting part is, while i was upset about losing the money, i think i was equally upset that someone stole it from me in japan!
as a half-japanese person i think i internalized some of the shame, haha— Shibetoshi Nakamoto (@BillyM2k) October 11, 2023
Dogecoin co-creator noted he felt an equal measure of shame
While he was disheartened by the loss of $500, Markus remarked that he felt a similar level of shame regarding the incident taking place in Japan, given his Japanese heritage. He attributed this feeling to internalizing specific cultural values related to honor and propriety.
Many commenters expressed interest in the particular details surrounding the theft. Markus admitted that it stemmed from a lapse in attention while engaging with the notably advanced toilet.
Some observers noted the irony in light of Markus’ background in creating one of the largest cryptocurrencies, which is intended to serve as digital cash. Dogecoin currently boasts a market capitalization exceeding $7 billion.
Nevertheless, the Dogecoin founder gained firsthand insight into the importance of staying alert in public areas, regardless of the perceived low crime rates in the vicinity. His cultural connections heightened the personal humiliation he felt.
