With the recent update to the smartphone application supporting its CBDC initiative, visitors to China can now preload their digital yuan wallets using Visa and Mastercard payment options.
The e-CNY app, which is currently in beta testing, is available for download from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store within China. The application is designed for users, enabling them to create digital yuan wallets for utilizing e-CNY.
Enhancing e-CNY Adoption
The iOS app’s version 1.1.1, released on September 22nd, introduces the capability to use foreign credit cards for in-app transactions. This latest version of the e-CNY app coincides with the start of the Asian Games.
China has been actively testing the acceptance of the digital yuan from international visitors. According to Yicai, the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics marked the initial instance where the CBDC pilot permitted foreign guests to use e-CNY for purchases at local establishments.
Reports indicate that international visitors can register for and utilize e-CNY wallets using their domestic phone numbers. Additionally, they can take advantage of the wallet recharge feature, which now accommodates Visa and Mastercard payments.
